Porsche does a lot of things well, but one area where the company does better than anyone else is this: special and commemorative edition cars. Ladies and gentlemen, join the company’s latest offering, the 2023 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet America Edition. That name might be a mouthful, but the only words you need to know are the last two: America Edition.

That’s right, this is our own star-studded variant of the 992-generation Porsche 911. It’s built to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Porsche 356 America Roadster which debuted in 1952 – and, by extension, the 30th anniversary of the 964 America Roadster, itself built to celebrate the 40th anniversary of this original 356.

The America Edition is available in one color: Azure Blue 356, a modern take on the original blue of the first 356 America. Those with a keen eye will notice the white stripe down the sides of the car with an even smaller red stripe down the middle. Basically, they painted a Porsche red, white and blue. Well Named.

At first, the wheels appear to be plain white. Take a closer look: they actually have three different finishes, meant to make them stand out and recall the silver wheels of the 356. Neato.

On top of that, the windscreen surround is painted black to give this Cabrio a more elegant look – tricking the eye into thinking the structure is thin and delicate, like on the 356.

Inside, the star pattern continues. The interior has a black base color, but is adorned with all sorts of red, white and blue accents. Well, technically it’s not white. The company told us the color was actually Pebble Gray because the white would stand out too much. It’s all about subtlety, which the United States is known for.

On the back, the badges have a bit of color too. “911 Carrera” is written in white and “GTS” is written in Guards Red.

Small details can be found throughout the interior – a white tachometer and red shift pattern and scooped stitching are just a few. Porsche says it wants America Edition buyers to continue to notice the new design aspects when they own and enjoy the car. Oddly enough, there’s no numbered badge indicating where your example is in the limited edition. However, the word “America” ​​is spelled on the center console in traditional Porsche letters.

The door sills also have the years 1952, 1992 and 2022 written on them to commemorate 70 years of America Roadsters. And the color of the ignition key matches the exterior of the car.

At base, the America Edition is a 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet, with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter flat-six making 473 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque, like the non-US version.

That power is channeled through a mandatory seven-speed manual transmission. You read that right: you can’t get the US Edition with a PDK dual-clutch automatic. Porsche says the decision was made because of the enthusiastic preference for manual transmissions among American 911 buyers.

PASM also comes as standard equipment. The same applies to a sports exhaust and the Sport Chrono Package. Porsche being Porsche, there are still options. You will have to pay for rear axle steering and carbon ceramic brakes.

You will also have to pay for the “extended interior package”. According to the folks at Stuttgart, this package gives you all the niceties of the interior you see. This includes things like the 12 o’clock marking in Guards Red on the steering wheel and the Guards Red cross stitch on the inside edge of the wheel. It also adds the two-tone stitching to the shift gaiter and adds a gear pattern on the manual lever in Guards Red.

Additionally, vehicles specified with extended interior package Sport Plus seats with double stitching in Guards Red and Pebble Gray with ‘911’ stitching on the head restraints in Guards Red and seatback release buckles in matching leather. Floor mats also receive the same two-tone stitching in Guards Red and Pebble Grey. Finally, the vehicle key is painted in 356 Azure Blue to match the car, and a leather key pouch with two-tone stitching and “America” ​​embossing completes the package.

So if you really want to make your America Edition special, it’s better to opt for the extended interior package. It’ll cost you, but hey, what’s the money when you buy a limited-edition Porsche?

As for cost, the US edition’s MSRP is $186,370 (including $1,450 for destination). That means the America Edition commands about $36,000 more than the base GTS convertible.

You can expect dealers to get the vehicles in late 2022, and while they haven’t been announced yet, Porsche expects them to sell out fairly quickly. A total of 115 copies will be produced — 100 for the United States and 15 for Canada.
