Bizarre ‘Polygons’ Appear in Mars Spring Image

It’s spring on Mars and the mysterious polygons are in bloom, shows a new image from the High Resolution Imaging Experiment (HIRISE) orbital camera.

Recorded on March 30, 2022, the image reveals a patchwork of white zig-zags cracking across the Martian floor at high latitudes, with occasional sprays of black and blue haze rolling out between them. Zig-zags and colorful sprays are hallmarks of the Martian source, when hidden reservoirs of subterranean ice collide with the dry Martian surface, wrote researchers from the University of Arizona – which runs the HIRISE mission – in a statement Monday (June 20).
