Delays, canceled flights, and being stuck in the middle seat may no longer be people’s top concerns when it comes to air travel.
A new possibility is offered to you: double-decker airplane seats for coaches. Just like the bus, one row is above another with the upper level reached by stairs.
“A new hell has just fallen,” tweeted author Amber Sparks in response to a CNN article about the design.
Others on social media also reacted to the seats. The writer Kaz Weida tweeted: “I will come back to comment on this once my claustrophobia allows me to breathe again.”
The prototype shown at this year’s Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, Germany, features a lack of overhead luggage storage in favor of an area between the two rows.
That leaves those in the top row with just 4.92 feet of space between the seats and the top of the plane, meaning passengers won’t be able to get up to exit.
The designer, Alejandro Núñez Vicente, argued that travelers already have to squat with the way current economy seats are designed.
Those seated in the bottom row have the opportunity to stretch their legs as there is no seat directly in front of them; however, the problem with this row is that it might make some travelers more claustrophobic than a middle seat currently does.
Some Reddit users are horrified by the idea, as one commented, “break both knees at the same time when you encounter turbulence!”
“Before you would just die, with this you would die being crushed,” another Reddit user wrote. “Another comment mentioned farting on it, so die being crushed and farted on it. Imagine not dying at first, you have to smell it, your last smell. There are worse ways to die, but there are also best ways.
The designer had a plan to revolutionize what it means to fly by coach. Frustrated with the lack of legroom, the 21-year-old set out to design a new seat model for airplanes. Núñez Vicente took a break from the Delft University of Technology in order to pursue this project, which is called the Chaise Lounge Airport seat and is currently in the prototype phase.
“If you had asked me before, I would have said that it might just be a university project. If you asked me now, after all the hard [work], after all the efforts of many, many people – I would say now it’s more of a reality. We see it as the future of economy class,” he told CNN.
In response to those who think the original seating arrangement is better, Núñez Vicente said he tries to pay close attention to negative comments because he is so young and wants to improve.
“One of the phrases I often hear is ‘If it ain’t broke, why change it? Said the designer. “So if passengers are always traveling in the worst seats in economy class, why are we going to give them a better option? It makes money. That’s the airline’s goal. ultimately not to improve your flight.
Núñez Vicente said he had received investment for the project and was talking with airlines and seat manufacturers.
“My goal here is to change seats to economy class for the betterment of humanity, or for all the people who can’t afford more expensive tickets,” he said.
