Albaster (Alabama) Thompson four-star defensive lineman Peter Woods has announced his commitment to Clemson. Woods had been a projection of Clemson by Tigerillustrated.com.

Woods (6-2, 265), ranked No. 57 nationally by Rivals.com, chose the Tigers over declared finalists Alabama, Florida and Jackson State. UGA, Ohio State, Auburn, Texas, Oklahoma, LSU and many others have also courted him.

But the home Tide was also the team to beat, and Alabama usually tends to get the prospects in the state they covet.

Make no mistake, Woods was high on everyone’s wish list – making this recruiting victory arguably the biggest statement yet in favor of Clemson, still enjoying the cachet that many media and observers claimed he lost after last season and amid the evolution of college football. countryside.

Clemson caused a stir by stealing five-star receiver Justyn Ross out of Alabama with the 2018 class, and that triumph perhaps matches if not exceeds in importance.

Woods was publicly considered a fatality by the tide for the majority of his recruiting.

The other big prospects at his high school — Taulia Tagovailoa and Clemson’s common target last year, defensive end Jeremiah Alexander — all enrolled in Alabama. Additionally, Woods is known to have grown up as a Bama fan in a pro-Tide family and has visited his campus countless times.

Yet as we framed for subscribers last month, when faith and family come first in a recruit, Clemson has a real shot.

“Clemson is so family oriented,” Woods told Tigerillustrated.com earlier this year. “Family is such a big thing. The culture around the program — you know, some people tell you what they’re going to do when you go to these tours. Clemson, they do a really good job of showing it and letting just you see a day in life there. It’s something that I feel I could really like from my college experience.

Two years ago, the Tigers lured Woods and his parents to the Dabo Swinney Camp to start their potential dating. As we frequently wrote, we viewed Clemson as Bama’s biggest threat to Woods when it comes to culture and relationships.

Todd Bates played a significant role in bringing the Tigers into the competition. Then the torch of senior scout passed to the new defensive tackles coach Nick Reasonwho was already pursuing Woods for Auburn.

Eason’s presence breathed new life into Clemson’s chances, while Swinney was also heavily involved personally in this pursuit.

Woods was the headliner for the Tigers’ official visit weekend for early June, and our reports indicate the weekend couldn’t have gone better from Clemson’s perspective.

But a month is a long time when someone with the muscle and the shadow of Bama looms over their shoulder.

Woods was absent during his official visit to Florida and did not end up arranging one with Bates and Oklahoma.

Then the last weekend in June, Woods traveled to Tuscaloosa, but it didn’t amount to a recruiting visit with the Tide coaches involved, another telltale sign.

We informed readers a few weeks ago that Bama understood the heightened threat Clemson presented.

The Tigers just needed Woods to stay resolute and nothing to change. It’s not, and TigerIllustrated.com revealed its projection for Woods at Clemson earlier this morning.
