Watch 15 minutes of Starfield gameplay

After a first glimpse of star field at Microsoft’s Xbox and Bethesda showcase last year and a postponement to 2023, we’re now taking a much closer look at Bethesda’s first new IP in 25 years thanks to 15 minutes of gameplay. star field takes place naturally in space where players will take on the role of a last group of explorers. Described as “Skyrim in Space,” by game director Todd Howard, the RPG will be playable in first and third person, but it’s primarily first-person.

During the early stages of gameplay, we come to the moon of Kreet, one of over 1,000 planets that players will be able to fly and explore freely. Powered by Bethesda’s new Creation Engine 2, the first star field gameplay shows a player roaming freely in both first and third person views, collecting resources and disturbing creatures that also feed star field‘s of many planets.

The gameplay progresses to an abandoned research lab, where the pirates are hiding. This is where we see the XP progression system in action per kill, and the weapons available in star field. You can even use a jet pack to propel yourself towards enemies. As with previous Bethesda games, you’ll need to pick locks on weapon holsters found everywhere star field if you are looking for loot.

The main story centers around the Constellation, the last group of space explorers. You meet them in the capital of New Atlantis, where you will discover that this group of explorers is looking for artifacts through the systems of star field. What are these artifacts for? This is the riddle to be solved. The systems in star field is full of groups you can team up with to take on the pirates.

Bethesda relies heavily on character customization, with Howard revealing that the character creator is the studio’s “most flexible yet,” allowing you to customize skin tones, facial structure, hair, and more. You’ll choose three traits to customize for your character, and the skill system will include separate unlocks and ranks. You can also use resources to craft weapon mods on top of that.

You can build your own outpost to generate resources across planets, and you can hire characters you meet to keep them operational. You can also build your own starships, choose your crew members, and completely customize the look and layout of the ship. There are a variety of ship builders and mods, so it seems easy to create a unique ship with different weapon systems or shields.

Flying looks particularly impressive in star field, and it suggests that many of the game’s battles won’t be limited to planets alone. You can land and freely explore all the planets in the system of star field, and Bethesda says there are over 1,000 planets all open to players to explore. It looks incredibly ambitious – even if the gameplay felt a bit sluggish at times. We do not yet have a specific date for its launch.

star field was originally slated to launch on November 11, 2022, a nod to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, but Microsoft announced a postponement to the vague “first half of 2023” just weeks before its Xbox showcase. Microsoft recently listed star field like “early 2023” in an Xbox Game Pass sign-up page and all games in the storefront are expected to release within the next 12 months. So it’s possible we won’t wait too long to start exploring. In both cases, star field launches exclusively on Xbox Series X/S and PC next year.
